Berkshire Force 16-U softball goes 3-2-1 at weekend tournament
The Berkshire Force 16-under softball team returned to East Hartford, Conn., last weekend for the USSSA Summer Shootout tournament, going 3-2-1 and falling in the consolation game.
The Force -- who will host the Babe Ruth Softball World Series in late July -- went 2-0-1 in pool play and advanced to Sunday's semifinal round before suffering two losses. After a 9-1 quarterfinal win over Diamond Sports Edge, Berkshire fell 7-2 to the Nightmare Elite and were beaten 11-9 by the NWS Elite team in the consolation game.
"These girls never quit all weekend," Force coach Jim Clary wrote in a message to The Eagle. "The bats were alive this tournament and the Force has [moved] closer to being properly prepared for the [World Series]."
Allie Hunt hit three home runs in the tournament, her third coming in the semifinal loss.
In the quarterfinal win, pitcher Emily Koldys struck out three and walked no one for her second win of the tournament. Hayley Tobin had three hits; Kailey Bell and Kayla Kowalczyk had two hits each; and Kacey Sondrini came up with a pinch-hit RBI double in the win. The Force scored in every inning of the game.
Berkshire advanced to the quarterfinal round after a 2-0-1 record in pool play. Koldys was the winning pitcher in a 7-3 win over the Connecticut Seahawks, and Julia Murphy was the winner in a 3-2 win over Diamond Sports Edge. The Force and Nightmare Elite tied at 4 in the final pool-play game.
