Berkshire Force roundup: 16U girls win Babe Ruth Softball World Series championship
JENSEN BEACH, FLA. — The Berkshire Force 16U softball team started the Babe Ruth World Series with a pair of losses in pool play.
It finished with five straight wins, culminating in a 5-1 decision over WVAC-Debary for the Babe Ruth World Series championship on Tuesday night.
The Force capped off a long Tuesday with an emphatic win. After their winner's bracket final game against Jensen Beach was postponed from Monday night to Tuesday morning, the Force won 6-4 to advance to the championship.
Then, after waiting out the day and finally starting their championship game at 7:30 p.m. — way past its originally 6 p.m. start time — the Force found themselves down 1-0 after a half inning.
In the bottom of the first, Toni Satrape hit a bunt single that plated Britney Perkett to tie the game. Then, in the third, the Force took the lead for good with a four-run inning.
In the frame, Perkett led off with a bunt single — the second of three on the day — and scored two batters later on a ground out from Hayley Tobin. Ashley Keegan came up next and hit a double that scored Elena Cerveira, Satrape followed that with a single and, after an error by Debary, Cerveira came around to make it 4-1.
That chased Debary starter Kendall Walsh from the game. Marissa Adame came on in relief, but Erin Murphy welcomed her to the game with a hard-hit single through short that scored Satrape and made it 5-1.
From there, Keegan was nearly untouchable.
The Taconic pitcher faced just three batters in the fourth, four in the fifth and three in the sixth. In the seventh, Debary got two runners on with one out, but Keegan slammed the door shut with two straight ground outs to end it.
Keegan had an efficient day, striking out three on five hits and one unearned run. She also went 1 for 3 at the plate with a run batted in.
Murphy went 1 for 3 with the run batted in. Perkett went 3 for 3 with two runs scored and Satrape finished 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI.
14U falls to JPRD West
The 14U girls were looking at a possible three games Tuesday. In the end, they ended up only playing one.
In the loser's bracket final, the 14U Force team fell to JPRD West 6-2.
JPRD took the lead for good in the third when Sofia Conaway hit a two-run double. The Force pulled a run back in the bottom of the inning when Mary Lee singled to bring around Madison Tobin, but in the bottom of the fifth, JPRD West scored one insurance run to create a deficit too big for the Force to whittle away.
JPRD added three more runs in the sixth, including an RBI double from Conaway.
In the top of the seventh, the Force scored one run when Payton O'Connell's fielder's choice plated Brianna Clary, but with two outs, Sarah McMahon hit into a fielder's choice to end the game.
Lee went the distance in the loss, striking out three on nine hits and five walks. All six JPRD runs were earned.
At the plate, McMahon and Lee finished 2 for 3. For JPRD West, Sierra Sacco went 2 for 3 with three runs scored. In the circle, Katelyn Luebbert earned the complete-game win, striking out two on eight hits and four walks.
