Berkshire School boys soccer opens postseason today
SHEFFIELD -- The Berkshire School boys soccer team, ranked No. 1 in the country by the Elite Soccer Report, will be the top seed in the upcoming New England Prep School Soccer Association Tournament.
The 16-0-1 Bears will host Choate (12-4-1) at Berkshire at 2 p.m. today. The winner of that game will host the winner of No. 4 seed Kent and No. 5 seed Hotchkiss on Saturday at Berkshire at a time to be determined.
Berkshire is ranked No. 1 in the Elite Soccer Report top 10, a national prep school newsletter that ranks schools across the country in several sports.
The NEPSSA has a total of 110 prep schools located throughout New England. The postseason tournament is divided into four divisions based on enrollment. Berkshire is technically a "B" Division school, accordng to coach Jon Moodey. But Moodey said he wanted his team to play in the top division, so they will be playing in the "A" tournament.
"We've been building for this season for several years," said Moodey.
The Bears recruit internationally, and have players from six states and five foreign countries. They also have three local players: seniors Jackson Borwick from Egremont and Matt Renzi and co-captain Noah Sinkoff, both from Richmond.
