• AMERICAN SON: Barrington Stage is bringing back its must-see, pitch-perfect world premiere production of Christopher Demos-Brown's brilliantly crafted, penetrating drama about a separated mixed race couple trying to get some answers from the police about the disappearance of their 18-year-old son. There's a lot in this intense, truthfully acted piece about black-police relations, family, marriage, identity, class but Demos-Brown handles it with impressive skill and focus. His play is enhanced from a first-rate cast that makes achingly real the devastating human damage — collateral and otherwise — in an America sharply divided by class and race. (Originally reviewed June 27). Closes Sept. 25. Evenings — Wednesday and Thursday at 7; Friday and Saturday at 8. Matinee — Sunday at 5. (1 hour 21 minutes — no intermission)
Barrington Stage Company, Boyd-Quinson Mainstage, 30 Union St., Pittsfield. Tickets — $69-$20. (413) 236-8888; barringtonstageco.org; in person at box office
THE COCKTAIL HOUR: A.R. Gurney Jr.'s play about an adult son who makes a visit to his parents to gain his father's approval of a play the son has written in which the central character is based upon his dad gets erratic, at best, treatment in a production that values artifice over art (Sept. 14). Closes Sept. 25. Evenings — Friday and Saturday at 8. Matinee — Sunday at 2. (2 hours — including one intermission)
The Theater Barn, 654 Route 20, New Lebanon, N.Y. Tickets — $27, $25. 518-794-8989
