BHCC duo prevails in Allied golf opener

Monday May 14, 2012

PITTSFIELD -- Berkshire Hills Country Club members John Dahrouge and Matt Ortega posted a best-ball score of 3-under 68 playing in the morning and it held up all day in the Allied Tour's season-opening tournament at the Country Club of Pittsfield on Saturday.

With a full field of 118 teams, the field was split for morning and afternoon shotgun starts with most of the favorites choosing to tee off at 1:15 p.m.

But Dahrouge and Ortega decided to be early birds and set a target score for the afternoon wave. None could match their round that included four birdies, an eagle and three bogeys on the par-71 layout.

Another duo from Berkshire Hills, MCLA baseball coach Jeff Puleri and teammate Steve Sykes, shot a 2-under 69 to finish second. Egremont Country Club's Frank Cipollino and Chris Martin were third with a 70.

Starting on the back nine, Dahrouge started fast with a birdie on the par-4 10th. After a pair of bogeys, Ortega really got the ball rolling with a chip-in eagle on the par-5 14th hole. Dahrouge then birdied the par-5 16th and Ortega birdied No. 18 for a 3-under opening nine. Their second nine included a birdie by Ortega on No. 8 and one bogey.

"At least one of us was in play on every hole," said Dahrouge, who is looking to put 2011 behind him. "Last year was definitely disappointing. I worked hard all winter and I'm still working on it. I've given up a little on distance and am looking to try to keep the ball in play more."

The Wyantenuck Country Club team of Tom Barry and Matt McCormick took low-net honors with a 61.
