Bits & Bites: Greek Fest on tap Saturday and Sunday
Greek Fest 2016
St. George Orthodox Church will hold its annual Greek Fest — billed as "A Taste of Greece Without the Travel." The festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20, and noon to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 21.
The festival will feature music, food, pastries, beverages, boutique, Greek dancers and church tours. Admission and parking are free. It will be held rain or shine.
The church is at 73 Bradford St., Pittsfield.
Whitney's Corn Fest
The 7th annual Corn Fest will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 21 at Whitney's Farm market, Route 8, Cheshire.
The fest offers fun for those of all ages including a corn eating contest, corn shucking contest, corn sack races, Uncle Pete's Peting Zoo, Uncle Pete's Dairy Bar, giant slide, and the chance to sample varieties of candy corn, white corn and butter and sugar corn.
The Great Barrington Historical Society will hold a Farmstead Picnic at 5:30 p.m. today on the grounds of the Wheeler Farmstead Headquarters on South Main Street, Great Barrington.
All are invited to this informal event. Advertised as "like Tanglewood except barn-style" participants should bring their own food, drink, folding chairs or blanket. A pot-luck dessert table will be set up so participants can bring a dessert to share.
The guest speaker will be contractor Scott Morrison with an update on the Dutch Wagon House Reconstruction Project.
Peach shortcake supper
The Pownal United Methodist Church, will serve its annual peach shortcake supper on Thursday, Aug. 18. The family-style dinner begins at 5 p.m. with continuous serving.
The menu includes grilled chicken breasts and thighs, baked ham, pineapple sauce, baked beans, potato and Jello salads, sliced tomatoes, rolls, coffee, iced tea, or lemonade and homemade peach shortcake.
Tickets available at the door: $12 for adults, $6 for children 4 to 10 years, free for children 3 years and younger. Take-outs available at south side entrance: $12 for adults; $6 for 1/2 portion dinner.
The church is at the corner of Route 346 and Church Street, Pownal, Vt.
Benefit chicken barbecue
The Dalton United Methodist Church, at 755 Main St., will host a chicken barbecue from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20. Proceeds will benefit the Dalton Fire Department and the church's Roof and Restoration Fund.
In addition to chicken, the menu will include corn on the cob, potato salad, watermelon, desserts and beverages.
Tickets for the barbecue are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger in advance; $12 for adults and $6 for children 12 and younger at the door. Take-out meals are available. For further information, call Lisa McColgan at the church, 413-684-0521, or Bernie Klem, 413-684-3286.
Lassie League breakfast
The Adams Babe Ruth Lassie League will hold a pancake breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 21, at St. Mary's parish Hall, 159 Church St., Cheshire.
The cost is $7 for adults, $5 for senior and children younger than 12.
