Bourdon, Briggs qualify for Massachusetts Public Links Championship

GRANBY — When the Massachusetts Public Links Championship is played next month at the Waubeeka Golf Links, the club's members will have a rooting interest.

Waubeeka's Jeff Bourdon shot a 4-over-par 76 on Tuesday in a Public Links qualifying tournament at Westover Golf Course to earn a berth in the Massachusetts Golf Association event at the Williamstown course, which is set for Aug. 7-8.

Two of the 11 qualifiers in the 48-player field at Westover belong to Berkshire County clubs. Wahconah Country Club's Paul Briggs, who had qualified for the Public Links several times in the past, also shot a 76 to get into the field.

Bourdon had one birdie and five bogeys to post his 4-over score while Briggs had three birdies and seven bogeys.

Chad Alibozek, a member at Forest Hills Country Club and Taconic Golf Club, faltered down the stretch, shooting a 43 on the back nine to shoot a 79. He missed getting into the field by one shot. However, he is an alternate. The 21-year-old was also an alternate for a spot in next week's Massachusetts Amateur Championship. He was second on the alternate list and is now in that field.

The medalist on Tuesday was Tekoa Country Club's James Patterson, who shot an even-par 72. Patterson is a former member at Worthington Golf Club and played in many Allied Association events when he was a member there.
