Brooklyn woman apparently drowns in East Otis pond

OTIS — A New York City woman apparently drowned Tuesday afternoon after taking a swim in White Lily Pond in East Otis.

Marilyn Joseph, 48, of Brooklyn, was out on a paddleboat with her 13-year old son when she decided to go swimming, according to a statement from Otis Police Chief Roberta Sarnacki.

Joseph "immediately" began struggling in the water and efforts by her son and a resident of the area to save her were unsuccessful.

A resident of Birch Lane called 911 about 5:50 p.m., according to the Otis Police Department.

The Berkshire County Sheriff's Office's dive team and the Otis Fire Department recovered Joseph's body about 7:15 p.m.

Joseph's son was taken to Berkshire Medical Center by Becket Ambulance Department. His condition was not clear.

White Lily Pond is one of several bodies of water in the town of Otis. It is located in the northwest corner of town, close to the borders with Becket and Blandford.

Joseph and her son were in the area visiting friends, Sarnacki said.
