BSO takes record $1.4M at Tanglewood gala

Wednesday July 18, 2012

LENOX -- The numbers are in. Tanglewood's 75th anniversary gala concert on Saturday night hit a grand slam for both revenue and attendance.

Total revenue for the three-hour reception, and dinner for contributors, combined with concert ticket sales, totaled $1.4 million before expenses, according to figures released by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The BSO operates both the summer festival and its institute for advanced pre-professionals.

BSO Managing Director Mark Volpe said it was "the largest amount raised for a single concert in Tanglewood's 75-year history."

Attendance was 16,831, among the highest in recent history for a non-Popular Artists event at Tanglewood.

"All of us at the BSO are deeply gratified by the incredible public enthusiasm," Volpe said, citing both the strong attendance and the money that was raised for the orchestra and its many activities.

"This is a spectacular way to begin what we hope will be a wonderful season for Tanglewood fans near and far," Volpe added.

The event, which attracted 563 benefactors and $850,000 for the pre-concert gala dinner, featured guest artists Yo-Yo Ma, James Taylor, pianists Peter Serkin and Emanuel Ax, and violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter.

The BSO, the Boston Pops and the Tanglewood Music Center performed under five conductors, including John Williams, who presented the first Tanglewood Medal to former BSO Music Director Seiji Ozawa, who was unable attend because of health issues.

The event also featured a well-received, 12-minute video history of Tanglewood, "Music Under the Moon." A PBS "Great Performances" special based on the gala will be televised on Friday, Aug. 10.
