Berkshire Gas' current, former owners merge; form new entity
The current and former owners of the Berkshire Gas Co. have officially merged to form a new publicly traded energy and utility company called Avangrid Inc.
Berkshire Gas' current owner, UIL Holdings Corp., of New Haven, Conn., merged with the local firm's former owner Iberdrola USA, the Maine-based American subsidiary of Spain's largest energy company.
Iberdrola sold Berkshire Gas and several affiliated energy firms to UIL in 2010. UIL and Iberdrola had announced that they planned to merge last March.
Avangrid will join the New York Stock Exchange today with $30 billion of assets in wind energy, utilities and natural gas storage, and operations in 25 states. The company will be traded under the symbol AGR.
James P. Torgerson, the president and CEO of UIL Holdings, has been named CEO of Avangrid.

Incorporated in 1994, BFAIR is a national and state accredited human services agency responsive to the unique needs of people with disabilities and their families. It is located on South Church Street.
