Bust of deceased state representative stolen in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD >> Police say the bust of a former state representative from Springfield that stood outside a social club in the Western Massachusetts city was stolen over the weekend.

The Springfield Republican reports the bronze likeness of Rep. Anthony Scibelli was taken from outside an Italian-American heritage club on Winthrop Street sometime before 11 a.m. Monday.

Police say they will ask local junkyards to look out for the bust and report anyone attempting to sell it.

The bust was seated atop a five-foot pedestal memorializing Scibelli as "A Man of the People." He represented Springfield's South End at the statehouse from 1950 until his death in 1998.

Mayor Domenic Sarno called the culprit "despicable" before praising Scibelli for his service to Springfield.

It's unclear if police currently have any suspects.
