Cantilena Chamber Choir plans MLK weekend open sing


LENOX — Cantilena Chamber Choir will present a Martin Luther King weekend Psalms and Spirituals open sing 3 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Church, 88 Walker St.

Special guests include the Zion AME Church Choir from Pittsfield, and community activist Shirley Ann Session Edgerton. Dr. King will be remembered in poems and speeches, but the focus of the program will be a spiritual sing-along with the choirs. The choirs will also perform works by themselves by Nathaniel Dett and Rollo Dilworth. All words and music will be provided.

Edgerton is a community activist and diversity trainer. She is the founder of the Women of Color Giving Circle, the Rites of Passage and Empowerment program for girls and founding director of Youth Alive performing arts group. She retired from the Department of Developmental Services as director of Berkshire County State Operated Homes for adults in January 2014. Currently, she is employed part-time with Pittsfield Public Schools. She serves on numerous boards and committees and has received several awards in recognition of her work in the community.

At Sunday's concert, Ms. Edgerton will discuss what she calls "the great (racial) divide" in America and where we go from here.

Zion AME Church Choir is under the direction of Paul Keele. The group has performed in numerous Berkshire venues including Barrington Stage Company and, most recently, Berkshire Museum.

Andrea Goodman, the founder and director of Cantilena, also serves as music director for the annual summer Saratoga Choral Festival in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Admission is free but there is a suggested donation of $15 per person.
