Canyon Ranch arson suspect put on house arrest
GREAT BARRINGTON -- The suspect in two separate arson and bomb threat cases at the Canyon Ranch resort is now under house arrest following his release from the Berkshire County Jail &House of Correction.
Miles M. Arnspiger, 23, of South Merriam St., Pittsfield, had been held without bail since his arrest by Lenox Police on Aug. 10. He has been charged with setting a small fire in a woodshed and previously writing a false bomb threat while he was employed as a security guard at the exclusive resort.
In a dangerousness hearing Thursday at Southern Berkshire District Court, Judge Fredric D. Rutberg ruled than Arnspiger was not a danger to the community, according to court records. But Rutberg ordered Arnspiger to be confined to his home, wearing an electronic monitoring device to track his movements.
The only exceptions to Arnspiger’s round-the-clock confinement are to attend sessions at the Brien Center for Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services in Pittsfield or to meet with his attorney, public defender Nathaniel K. Green.
Arnspiger is due back at the Great Barrington court on Sept. 27 for a pre-trial hearing.
He faces two felony charges in connection with the Aug. 3 fire in a wood storage shed at Canyon Ranch that Arnspiger put out himself with help from Lenox firefighters, and for a handwritten bomb threat he passed on to local police on May 19.
Following an extensive investigation, Lenox police charged that Arnspiger wrote the note himself. During his arraignment on Aug. 10 before Judge Rita S. Koenigs at Central Berkshire District Court in Pittsfield, Arnspiger pleaded not guilty to the felony counts.
No one was injured in the fire, which was called in by Arnspiger.
