Car fire stops traffic on Route 7 in Lenox

LENOX >> A car burst into flames in Lenox on Saturday afternoon, bringing traffic to a standstill on busy Route 7.

The 2009 Nissan Altima caught fire some time before 4 p.m., said patrolman Michael T. Smith. He told the Eagle that witnesses said they watched as the vehicle stopped in the middle of the left northbound lane and the occupants jumped out. Smoke was visible.

When Smith arrived on the scene at 4 p.m., the smoke had mostly cleared and he was set to wait for the wrecker with the car's occupants.

"The next minute, the car just burst into flames," he said.

The fire apparently started in the engine, under the hood. Smith called the Lenox Fire Department to put out the blaze.

"The fire went for about five to 10 minutes before they got there," he said.

The wrecker brought the remains of the vehicle to downtown Lenox auto shop Hoff's Auto.
