Ceiling collapse in apartment injures child
PITTSFIELD -- An infant escaped serious injury Sunday after part of a ceiling collapsed on the youngster in an apartment at 77 Union St., authorities said.
The child, a 1-year-old girl, was watching television with her 3-year old sibling in the Miles family’s apartment at about 3:10 when the suspended ceiling fell, according to the Pittsfield Fire Department.
The parents, whose first names along with the children weren’t available, immediately called 911.
Upon arrival, rescuers found the 1-year old with scratches and bruises, but alert, according to fire officials.
The girl was taken to Berkshire Medical Center as a precautionary measure and possible treatment.
Her condition wasn’t immediately known Sunday night.
The sibling was not injured.
Owners of the apartment building, Cavalier Management, agreed to find alternate housing for the Miles family on Sunday night until the damage could be assessed, fire officials said.
