Cheshire woman, 103, named state's oldest female veteran

CHESHIRE — Eileen Nuttall recently celebrated her 103rd birthday with family and friends at the Cheshire Community Center.

At the birthday celebration, a resolution recognizing Nuttall as the oldest female veteran in the commonwealth of Massachusetts was presented by Carol Francesconi representing the Cheshire Town Selectmen and Anna Franam representing American Legion Unit 160, District 1.

Nuttall was born Nov. 28, 1912, and raised in Cheshire. She joined the Armed Services on April 5, 1943, and served for more than three years during World War II, rising to the rank of photographic laboratory technician.

After leaving the Army, she returned to Cheshire and became a leader in the community as an original member of the Cheshire Historical Society.

She married Hollis Nuttall in 1950 and they had two sons, Alan Nuttall and Bruce Nuttall. Her husband died in 1986.
