At their recent meeting approving a proposed town budget for action at Town Meeting on May 2, the Lenox Selectmen voted 5-0 to slash from $97,500 to $55,000 proposed economic development funding for events planning and marketing to bolster off-season tourism and increase lodging and meals revenue. The original $97,500 had included a widely debated allotment of $52,500 for a year-round events coordinator. Because of an editing error, a headline and article in Tuesday's Eagle stated that the Select Board specifically eliminated money for the coordinator. If Town Meeting approves the $55,000 designated for economic development, the Select Board can choose to use the funds for an events coordinator, other initiatives, or a combination of tourism marketing priorities.
