Clarksburg State Park swim area to reopen for first time since 2014

CLARKSBURG — Swimming will again be permitted in Clarksburg State Park beginning June 19.

There will be no lifeguards at the site, but there will be a designated swim area in Mauserts Pond for the first time since 2014, according to state Department of Conservation and Recreation Deputy Commissioner Matthew Sisk.

"This is exciting news for us," he said in a phone interview with The Eagle. "We have a beautiful facility with camping, hiking, grilling, cross-country skiing and now you add swimming to that."

Issues plaguing the state-owned site for years including goose droppings and geese infestation, beavers and weeds have been resolved, Sisk said. Water testing has begun and will be ongoing to ensure that the water is safe for swimming, he said. Weed growth is monitored.

"We have a yearly weed infestation program that is part of our Lakes and Ponds Division," he said.

The park on Middle Road boasts 368 acres with a day use area, a 45-space camping area, picnic sites, small grills, bathrooms, a pavilion and 9.5 miles of hiking trails. The park is three miles west of the 3,011-acre Clarksburg State Forest

Season pass costs jumped from $35 to $60 for this season.

Sisk said that the hikes are unavoidable. He noted the beautiful grounds and views offered at the Clarksburg site.

"With budgeting constraints statewide, and the DCR basically having to fund itself, this is necessary," Sisk said. "The Clarksburg park has camping, hiking, swimming, picnicking, and there are lots of other places in the Northern Berkshires where people can hike trails for free. We do want to encourage people in state and out of state to enjoy our state parks."
