Cocaine, heroin, PCP get Pittsfield man jail time

PITTSFIELD -- A Pittsfield man was sentenced to 18 months in jail on Thursday after pleading guilty to possession of cocaine, heroin and PCP, which police found during a raid on the home he shared with his girlfriend.

Wilselino Salgado Jr., 25, and Annette Matta, 24, were arrested on Sept. 4 after Pittsfield Police and Berkshire County Drug Task Force members executed a search warrant at their White Terrace home.

The raid turned up 22.5 grams of crack cocaine with a street value of $2,500, 16 packets of heroin, a small amount of phencyclidine (PCP), and drug-dealing paraphernalia.

Police said they had made controlled drug buys at the couple's home, which was being used as "a base of operation to distribute cocaine and heroin."

Salgado appeared in Central Berkshire District Court with his attorney, Michelle Mechta, and pleaded guilty to single counts of felony possession of cocaine and heroin with the intent to distribute and misdemeanor possession of PCP. The last charge stems from marijuana laced with the drug that the couple used recreationally, which was located in the home, police said.

Salgado had been facing a charge of cocaine trafficking, but the Berkshire District Attrney's Office reduced the charge to possession with the intent to distribute.

Judge Jacklyn M. Connly handed down an 18 month sentence in the case, in line with a joint recommendation between the DA's Office and Mechta. The judge allowed Salgado time to get his affairs in order and delayed the execution of his sentence on Nov. 18.

Until that time Salgado remains free on $5,000 cash or $50,000 surety bail.

Matta, represented by attorney Joseph P. Colonna, had her case continued until Nov. 5. She did not change her plea and remains free on $2,500 cash or $25,000 surety bail.

The DA's Office intends to bring her case to the grand jury.

If convicted of the cocaine trafficking charges, Matta is facing a maximum of 15 years with a two-year minimum mandatory prison sentence.
