College roundup: Williams men's lacrosse knocks off Middlebury in season finale


MIDDLEBURY, VT. — Down by two goals entering the fourth quarter, the Williams men's lacrosse team outscored Middlebury by six to post a 13-9 win on the road.

The game was the last of the regular season for the Ephs, and pushes the team to 9-6 overall and 5-5 in the NESCAC.

Tanner Maclvor scored three of his four goals in the final frame, including the eventual game-winner with 7:40 to go in the contest. Michael Fahey had a hat trick and an assists, while Jack Lauroesch also had a hat trick in the win. Miles McCarthy had 12 saves in the win

For Middlebury, Tim Giarrusso had three goals as did Sean Carroll. Will Ernst stopped 12 shots.

College Baseball


WILLIAMSTOWN >> Five Williams pitchers combined for a six-hit shutout of RPI on Wednesday.

The Ephs scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first and second innings, then tacked on two more in the third for insurance.

The win improves the Ephs to 10-17 on the year.

Will O'Brien got the win, giving up one hit in 2 1/3 innings of work. Alex Beschloss pitched four innings for the Ephs, striking out three on three hits. Aaron Kalish took the loss for RPI.

Jack Cloud and Nathan Michalski each drove in a run in the win.

The Ephs are back in action on Friday with a home game against Hamilton.

College Women's Lacrosse


WILLIAMSTOWN >> Bridget Instrum scored with 4:09 left in overtime to lift Middlebury over Williams on Wednesday.

The goal was Instrum's third of the day, and handed the Panthers a win after Williams' Emma Tenbarge scored on a free-position shot with 45 seconds left in regulation to tie the game up.

Williams (5-10, 2-8 NESCAC) had a 6-4 lead at halftime, but trailed 9-8 with 10:50 to go.

In the loss, Tenbarge finished with four goals while Natalie Gill had a pair of goals. Margaret Draper had five saves.

Instrum's hat trick led the Panthers, and Katie Mandigo had three saves.

The game was the last of the regular season for the Ephs.


FITCHBURG >> Kayla Panek scored four goals and added four assists for Fitchburg State in its win over MCLA.

Andrea Comeau added a hat trick for Fitchburg (13-4, 6-1 MASCAC) while Brianna Dunn registered two assists.

For MCLA (3-10, 0-6), Mackenzie Cutler scored while Rachel Green added an assist. Zoe Elwell had 20 saves for the Trailblazers.

MCLA closes out the regular season at home Saturday against Salem State.

College Softball


NORTH ADAMS >> The MCLA softball team dropped a pair of MASCAC games to Westfield State on Wednesday, losing 8-4 in the first game and 5-1 in the nightcap.

In game one, Westfield rallied out of a 4-1 hole in the sixth with a six-run inning.

Erika Gouin, Angelica Banning and Sydney Ezold each had a pair of RBI in the win for the Owls, and Sarah Eugenio went the distance in the circle for the win, striking out two on nine hits.

For MCLA, Katelyn Henault took the loss, striking out two on 11 hits with three walks. At the plate, Katie Berghela went 2 for 4 with a run scored.

In the second game, Westfield went up 4-0 on MCLA with a three-run fourth to put the game out of reach.

Julia Sullivan took the win in the circle, striking out six on four hits with one walk. Rachel Quackenbush took the loss, striking out 12 on six hits with three walks.

Liz Kelly went 3 for 4 with an RBI in the win, while Jennifer Sicinski went 1 for 3 with an RBI in the loss.

MCLA is now 11-19 overall and 5-7 in the MASCAC. The Trailblazers wrap up the regular season on Saturday with a doubleheader at Worcester State.
