College roundup: Williams men's lacrosse thumps Carthage College


COLORADO SPRINGS, CO. >> The Williams men's lacrosse team picked up an 18-7 win over Carthage College on Saturday afternoon.

The Ephs took a 5-3 lead after one quarter, then blew the lead out to 9-4 at the half and 15-5 after three.

Michael Fahey, Thomas Fowler and Jack Lauroesch each had hat tricks in the win, while Fowler also had three assists for the Ephs (5-3).

Calvin Collins, Tanner Maclvor and Peter Crane all added two goals in the win. For Carthage (3-4), Andy Szun had a hat trick.

In the cage, Miles McCarthy stopped 15 shots in three quarters of action, and Patrick Shayer had two saves in 15 minutes of action.

The Ephs return to action on Wednesday at home against Tufts.

BUZZARDS BAY >> The MCLA women's lacrosse team fell to Massachusetts Maritime, 20-4, to start MASCAC action on Saturday.

Mass. Maritime rolled out to a 13-2 lead after the first half to secure the win and move to 4-2 on the season. MCLA falls to 2-4.

For the Trailblazers, Natalie Caney had a hat trick and Mackenzie Cutler scored the other goal. Taylor Brewer had two assists. Mass. Maritime was led by Stephanie Hunt, who scored six goals and had four assists in the rout.

Zoe Elwell stopped 12 shots in the cage for MCLA, and Mikayla Correia had six saves in the win.

MCLA is back in action on Wednesday at Southern Vermont College.

College Softball


WATERVILLE, MAINE >> The Williams softball team picked up a sweep against Colby on Saturday, winning 11-3 in five innings in the first game before winning 12-3 in the nightcap.

The wins move the Ephs to 14-5 on the year.

College Baseball


SALEM >> The MCLA baseball team fell in a doubleheader to Salem State on Saturday, losing 5-0 in the first game and 6-2 in the second.

The losses were MCLA's first two games of MASCAC conference play, and drop the Trailblazers to 3-11 on the year. Salem State improves to 7-9-1 and 2-0 in the MASCAC.

In game one, Salem held a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth, but an Andrew Deloury home run sparked a 4-run inning to help the Vikings seal the win.

Billy Pulask had two hits in the loss.

Liam Nolan took the loss after pitching 4 2/3 innings, striking out four while giving up five earned runs. Sean Buckland took the complete-game win and struck out 12.

In game two, MCLA trimmed a 3-0 deficit to 3-2 after the top half of the sixth, but the Vikings put three runs on the board in the bottom of the inning to seal the win.

Brett Labont and Joe Dimassim each drove in a run in the loss, and Dimassim finished with three hits. Todd Hunt took the loss after going five innings. He struck out three and walked three. Mike Richardson took the win, striking out three in five innings of work.


TUCSON, ARIZ. >> The Williams baseball team dropped a pair of games to Middlebury on Saturday to wrap up their Spring Training trip in Arizona.

The Ephs fell 2-1 in the first game, then 11-4 in the second. Middlebury avenged an 8-2 loss to the Ephs from the day before.

Williams finished its trip out west with a 5-10 record overall and a 1-2 record in the NESCAC. The Ephs return to action on Wednesday at Westfield State for a non-conference game.
