College roundup: Williams softball advances to NCAA regional finals

WILLIAMSTOWN >> After getting rained out of its NCAA Division III Tournament opener on Friday afternoon, the Williams softball team returned to Cole Field knowing it would have to play at least two games on Saturday to make it to Sunday's regional final.

The Ephs ended up playing three, but still got to their final destination.

Playing against Johnson & Wales in the first game on Saturday, the Ephs fell 9-0 in a five-inning contest that dropped them into the loser's bracket. From there, the Ephs recovered with a 9-0 win over Western Connecticut to set up a rematch with Johnson & Wales, which fell to MIT in the winner's bracket second game.

In the rematch, the Ephs fell behind by a run after two innings, but bounced back with two in the top of the third to take the lead for good en route to a 6-1 decision.

In the second game against Johnson & Wales, Alejandra Magana took the win in the circle, going the distance while striking out three and walking four. She gave up three hits, one of which was a home run to Diana Amendolara in the second that gave Johnson & Wales the lead.

For the Ephs, Erica Li went 2 for 3 with three runs scored out of the lead-off spot, and Mackenzie Murphy went 4 for 4 with three RBI. Lexi Curt drove in a pair of runs, as well, finishing 1 for 3 at the plate with a sacrifice fly.

In Williams' first game against Johnson & Wales, Brooke Bovier took the loss and was bounced after two innings of work, giving up six runs on seven hits. At the plate, only Kacey Cramer and Murphy recorded hits in the shutout. Johnson & Wales was led by Emily Schaper, who went 3 for 3 with four runs batted in. Jennifer Corona took the win, going the distance while striking out two and walking one.

Against Western Connecticut, Murphy took the win after pitching six innings. She struck out five on four hits. At the plate, Li went 4 for 4 from the lead-off spot with four runs scored, and Jessica Kim went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Curt drove in three runs while going 1 for 4.

Williams faces MIT Sunday at noon. The 'if' game, should Williams win, will follow immediately after. MIT will be the designated home team by virtue of its 2-0 record at the regional.
