College Roundup: Williams women's hockey opens season with win
WILLIAMSTOWN >> Talia Simon's power-play goal late in the third period gave the Williams women's hockey team a 2-1 season-opening win over Hamilton on Friday.
Natalie Bernstein started the scoring for the Ephs (1-0-0) with a first-period goal. Hamilton (0-1-0) answered with Hannah Bartlett's buzzer-beating goal at the end of the second period.
Cleroux picked up the win in goal. She made 19 saves.
The two teams will face off again today at 3 p.m. back in Williamstown.
CASTLETON STATE 98, MCLA 97 OT
In North Adams, Chad Copeland's jumper with two seconds left in overtime gave Castleton State a win over MCLA.
MCLA (2-2) had a chance at forcing a second overtime, but St. Joseph graduate Joe Wiggins made only one of two free throws with 23 seconds remaining, setting the stage for Copeland's winner.
Isshiah Coleman helped send the Trailblazers to overtime, with a well-timed block at the end of regulation.
Copeland led the Spartans with 27 points and 19 rebounds. Rob Coloutti added 26 points, including eight three-pointers.
Paul Maurice led MCLA with 18 points, 16 rebounds and nine assists. Careem Kirksey added 18 points.
MCLA hosts Williams Tuesday, at 7 p.m.
