Cop: Woman fatally struck by SUV was dragged nearly 40 feet

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. >> A retired Springfield police officer says a woman who was allegedly run down by another woman who thought she stole her boyfriend was dragged under her SUV for nearly 40 feet.

The Republican reports retired officer Edward Laviolette testified Wednesday at the trial of Ana Mercedes Franceschi, who's charged with murder in the death of 32-year-old Yasmin Marin.

Prosecutors say the 42-year-old Franceschi thought Marin caused the breakup with her boyfriend, and ran her down as the victim crossed the street with her teenage daughter in 2013.

Marin's daughter said Thursday her mom raised her hand to stop Franceschi, but the SUV sped up. The defense says Marin walked into the road to stop Franceschi's car, and Franceschi didn't have time to stop.

Testimony is scheduled to resume Friday.
