Less than two weeks after being named Miss USA, Olivia Culpo lost her great-grandmother, Eliza "Alice" Cantarella, on Friday. She was 101 years old, and had been ill for about a year before her passing.

Alice Cantarella was born on the fourth of July in Italy in 1910. She arrived in the U.S. in 1921, living with her family in Reads boro, Vt. Later after residing in North Adams, she ended up in Pittsfield in 1925. A fan of the Boston Red Sox, she was active with Pittsfield Parks and Recreation. She was married in 1933, and became a widow in 1992.

She leaves a rich heritage: She is survived by three sons, one daughter, 18 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral arrangements can be found in her obituary on Page B4.

Given the circumstances, the family gave its blessing to the planned publication today of this story; interviews were conducted earlier in the week.
