Cummington man sentenced for child sexual assault
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) - A 53-year old Cummington man has been sentenced to up to 18 years in prison for sexually assaulting a friend's 10-year-old daughter.
Richard Meyer was sentenced Tuesday in Hampshire Superior Court, a day after he was convicted by a jury of two counts of indecent assault and battery on a child under age 14.
Prosecutors say Meyer assaulted the girl in October 2012.
The girl, now 11, took the stand at the trial.
Prosecutors praised her bravery, saying her willingness to testify possibly saved other children from abuse.
Meyer had previously been convicted of a sex crime in Florida in 1986 and was listed as a Level 2 sex offender in Massachusetts, considered a moderate risk to re-offend and triggering a minimum 15-year sentence.
