Czech orchestra accompanying "Fantasia" screening at Proctors

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. >> The Czech National Symphony Orchestra will be featured live in the onstage/onscreen presentation, "Disney Fantasia — Live in Concert," 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Proctors, 432 State St.

The program, built around Walt Disney's original "Fantasia" and Disney's "Fantasia 2000," features live accompaniment by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ted Sperling, while elements of both films are screened in HD.

Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker Suite" is included, alongside other iconic moments from Disney's footage, among them Mickey Mouse's magical dabbling in Dukas' "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," and the mythical unicorns and winged horses that accompany Beethoven's "Pastoral" Symphony.

Released in 1940, "Fantasia" was a pioneering merger of music and animation, which became a much-beloved film. "Fantasia 2000" traced a similar path of using a classical music soundtrack, but added a blend of old and new technologies to the visual component.

Ticket information is available by phone at (518) 346-6204, online at or in person at the Proctors box office.
