Digging at roots of the Civil War: Manish Sinha to speak at the Bryant House

CUMMINGTON -- "Did the Abolitionists cause the Civil War?" Manish Sinha, professor of Afro-American Studies and History at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, will answer that question in a talk at the William Cullen Bryant Homestead at 2:30 on Saturday afternoon, May 31.

Born in India, Professor Sinha was drawn to the study of American slavery by an interest in the Civil Rights movement's use of Gandhi's non-violent strategies. She has written several books and many articles about the Civil War period. She often brings the lessons of 150 years ago to examination of present political tensions in pieces for the New York Times Opinionator, the History News Network and other publications. She appeared in the PBS 2013 documentary "The Abolitionists" and most recently on a segment of "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart."

Earlier on the same day, the Homestead will open free to all from 10 a. m. to 2 p. m. in the "Home Sweet Home" invitation to the public to visit historic homes owned by The Trustee of Reservations. For more information, visit thetrustees.org
