Dog hurt when thrown from moving car in Chicopee

CHICOPEE, Mass. (AP) - A veterinarian says a small dog tossed from a moving car and run over in Chicopee is doing well but is not out of the woods yet.

Another driver witnessed the dog being thrown from the car Wednesday morning then run over by the rear tire of the same vehicle.

The Good Samaritan brought the dog to the Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Adoption and Control Center.

Veterinarian Lauren Atkins says the seven-pound, male schnauzer-terrier mix, appeared to suffer a broken leg.

Atkins tells The Republican that the next 24 to 48 hours are critical because the dog could have suffered internal bleeding, bruised lungs or other internal injuries not apparent in the initial examination.

The law enforcement arm of the MSPCA has been contacted and has started an investigation.
