Driver flees after crashing Mercedes into Pittsfield building

PITTSFIELD -- City police say a car went over a snow bank, hit two cars and struck a building on Elm Street early this morning.

Flatbed trucks towed two damaged vehicles from the scene of 227 Elm St. around 1 a.m. on Wednesday.

The operator of the vehicle in question, a Mercedes, fled the scene and police continued searching for this person in the early morning hours, according to Pittsfield Police Sergeant Mark Bushey.

A promising lead failed to materialize when police did not find the operator at a Holmes Road address they'd been provided.

"The hunt continues," Bushey said around 2 a.m.

Authorities sent word to Berkshire Medical Center to notify them of any arriving patients with injuries that could have been sustained in a car crash.
