Drury golfers sharp in win over PHS

STAMFORD, Vt. -- Defending North Division champion Drury High School had three of its veteran players break 40 to get off to a winning start with an impressive nine-shot victory over Pittsfield High School at Stamford Valley Golf Course.

Doug Sigsbury led the Blue Devils with a 1-over 37 while Nick Bator and and Nick Trombley both shot 38 as Drury totaled 154.

Despite the loss, the Generals also had a strong performance that was led by Justin Martin, who made four birdies on his way to an even-par 36. Jerry McDonough and Kevin Quinto also had solid days, starting the season with rounds of 41.

"We lost our best player [Matt Lawrence, who graduated], but we have a veteran team," said Drury coach Don Dagnoli. "Still, you don't know until you play your first match and everyone played well."

Both teams found the Stamford Valley layout friendly -- they combined to make a total of nine birdies in the match.

"Pittsfield also lost its best player from last year [Ryan Grande], but they look like they have a solid team," Dagnoli said. "Justin Martin made four birdies playing in the No. 5 spot and looks like a solid player."
