Easthampton man charged in hammer assault

NORTHAMPTON (AP) -- An Easthampton man has been charged with using a hammer to assault two disabled women.

Gary Couchon was ordered held without bail after pleading not guilty Monday to charges including attempted murder in connection with the alleged attack at about 9 p.m. Sunday. A dangerousness hearing was scheduled for Friday.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that police say the 59-year-old Couchon forced his way into the apartment of two women who sublet from his son. The women told police they are disabled due to previous back injuries.

The women told police that he screamed at them, threatened to kill them, and swing a hammer at one woman, hitting her in the shoulder when she ducked. He also allegedly choked one woman.

The women called 911.
