Egremont post office remains closed after being struck by vehicle

EGREMONT — The post office in South Egremont remains closed indefinitely after being struck by a vehicle on Tuesday night.

"He didn't graze it; he didn't kiss it," said Maureen Marion, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Postal Service. "He crashed right into the front of the building."

There was no report on the identity or condition of the driver. The accident was reported at about 7 p.m.

"We don't have an estimate as to how long we'll be closed," Marion said. "We deeply regret the inconvenience to our customers."

There is no postal delivery in Egremont. Marion said the post office has a total of 440 post office boxes for customers.

Those postal customers are being directed to the Great Barrington post office on Main Street.

Marion said repair personnel from the New England headquarters are on site assessing the damage. She said that as of Wednesday afternoon, there was no assessment of the damage or a cost estimate.
