Eph basketball teams earn sweep on the court
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Before the 2012-13 season started, Williams men's basketball coach Mike Maker said he had a lot of weapons at his disposal. Monday night, host Wesleyan shut down NESCAC player of the week Mike Mayer, so enter Taylor Epley.
Epley scored a team-high 13 points and the Williams defense held 23rd-ranked Wesleyan to 29 percent shooting from the floor in a 56-48 win over the Cardinals. The win kept Williams' perfect start going. The Ephs are 3-0 and now are off until they face MCLA Sunday.
The Cardinals (2-1) last lead in the game came with 12:33 left on a Shasha Brown drive to the bucket that put his team up 8-7.
Williams' Sean Hoffman made one of two at the line to tie the game and after a turnover, Nate Robertson hit Daniel Wohl for a layup to put the Ephs in the lead. While the Cardinals did come back and tie the game at 10, they never caught up.
Mayer, who was held to eight points on 3-of-7 shooting, did pull down 10 rebounds. Wohl scored seven and also had 10 assists.
Brown led Wesleyan with 25 points, but needed to make 8-of-22 shots to get there.
Williams women 43, Springfield 31
SPRINGFIELD -- It took the 23rd-ranked Williams women (3-0) more than three minutes to get on the scoreboard against Springfield, missing four shots and committing a turnover.
Claire Baecher's jumper with 16:45 left in the half took the lid off the Eph basket. Six minutes later, freshman Katie Litman scored four unanswered points and the Ephs never trailed again.
Springfield did a good job defending Baecher, who was held to four points on 2-for-6 shooting from the floor. Guard Ellen Cook scored 10 of her game-high 17 points in the second half as the Ephs pulled away to the double-digit win.
Danny Rainer scored only five points for the Ephs, but she pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and dished out a game-high four assists.
For Springfield (1-2), Meghan Biondillo had 10 points.
NORTH ADAMS -- The MCLA women's soccer team has won a National Soccer Coaches Association of America academic award.
The award is handed out to teams in all three NCAA Divisions and is given to teams with cumulative grade-point averages of 3.0 or better. The Trailblazers had a 3.14 GPA.
