Ephs women's golf has a shot at title
ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Williams College women are still within striking distance of their first NCAA Division III golf championship.
After three rounds, coach Erika DeSanty’s Ephs are seven strokes behind 14-time defending champion Methodist (N.C.).
Williams got back into the thick of things by shooting 309 on Thursday at the Zollner Golf Course. The Ephs have a three-day total of 939. Methodist shot 932 and second-place DePauw (Ind.) shot 313. All three schools will tee off together in today’s final round.
Williams’ Georgi Salant, meanwhile, remains in contention for an individual championship. The Eph standout shot a 78 for a three-day total of 229. She is in sixth place but only four strokes behind third-round leader Catherine Wagner of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
At Wednesday night’s National Golf Coaches Association banquet, Salant and teammate Victoria Student were named to the East Region All-Stars.
HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Williams baseball team needed a late-season push to qualify for the NESCAC tournament. The Ephs are in, and they’ll get East Division champion Trinity in the first round.
"I told our team we’ve already played five playoff games this season," Williams coach Bill Barrale said.
The Ephs are seeking their third NESCAC tournament title. Williams won in 2001 and 2007 by beating Tufts both times. Williams has not returned to the title game since and missed the tournament field completely last year.
The other first-round game in the double-elimination tournament will be played at Wesleyan where West Division champion Amherst plays East runner-up Bowdoin.
The losers today play Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Wesleyan. The winners-bracket final will be at 10:30 at Trinity. The championship game is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday, with an "if" game following.
