'Everyone's happy' the power is restored at Morgan Manor in Lenox

Friday November 2, 2012

LENOX -- Power and heat have been restored to Morgan Manor and now "everyone's happy," according to property manager Dave Pill.

Power came back on at the condominium complex for senior citizens late Wednesday afternoon. Power was knocked out Monday afternoon by Hurricane Sandy's winds.

On Wednesday, it took a National Grid crew six hours of work to get the poles and power lines back up, according to Pill

Once power to Morgan Manor was back, Pill said he flipped the furnaces and water heaters back on. He switched them off when the power went out to avoid a hard start whenever power was restored.

"A little bit of heat, and everyone's happy," Pill said. "It doesn't take much sometimes."

National Grid and Verizon were in a dispute over who had responsibility to fix the utility poll, but on Wednesday, National Grid "decided it was their's, finally," Pill said. State Rep. William "Smitty" Pigna telli's office had to step in to push an end to the dispute.

Efforts to reach National Grid for this report were unsuccessful.

The situation angered many residents of Morgan Manor who were living by candlelight and without heat since the power had been knocked out. Perishable foods were spoiled without electricity, but residents could still use the gas stoves.

One resident of Morgan Manor told The Eagle on Wednesday she was outraged that the dispute between the two companies dragged on for a couple days.

"For what we pay to them, it's unfathomable this could happen," said 80-year-old Dorothy "Dot" Paud.

The only damage that hasn't been fixed on Morgan Manor property is a street lamp on the grounds, Pill said.
