Ex-martial arts trainer convicted in Salem of beating girlfriend

SALEM >> A former mixed martial arts instructor from Salem has been found guilty of charges he repeatedly abused his girlfriend, leaving her disfigured and nearly blind.

The Salem News reports that 40-year-old Joseph Louf was convicted in Salem on Monday of mayhem, maiming and assault and battery causing serious bodily injury.

The former Beverly instructor was acquitted of one count of mayhem.

Authorities say the victim told family she'd been beaten repeatedly by Louf after they began dating in 2012 and that he's broken her nose several times. She underwent emergency surgery for two detached retinas.

Louf's attorney argued the woman's injuries were the result of MMA "sparring" and fights. Prosecutors said there was no evidence the woman took part in the extreme sport.

Louf will be sentenced Oct. 24.
