Facelift for 'Y'
Photo Gallery: New sign at Pittsfield 'Y'
PITTSFIELD - Call it a sign of the times.
On Monday, Callahan Sign Co. workers helped remove the aging yet iconic red and blue "Y" from the brick façade of the Pittsfield Family YMCA building on North Street to replace it with a new orange and coral red "Y" printed on a white background. In addition, new awnings are also scheduled to be installed this week.
Pittsfield Family YMCA membership and marketing director Michelle Green said the new sign is part of a national rebranding campaign of the YMCA of the USA.
"This doesn't necessarily change what we do but does change how we talk about ourselves," Green said.
She said YMCA of the USA commissioned a study and found that while more than 90 percent of people recognize the Y, "very few understand the breadth of services that Ys offer."
"Most people think we are a gym and swim," Green said. "And we do offer those services, but we do so much more for the community."
She said the Y's three areas of focus are now "youth development, healthy living and social responsibility."
