Film Clips

BLENDED (PG-13). After a disastrous blind date, two single parents hope to never see each other again but end up stuck on the same family vacation with their respective children. With Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, Kevin Nealon, Terry Crews. Review, this page

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (PG-13). "Winter Soldier" takes a flying leap off the basic premise of superhero movies and sails away in unexpected crowd-pleasing directions. This grippingly, stylishly made film delivers mechanically perfect shocks and much more. With Anthony Mackie, Robert Redford. HHH (Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune -- 4/5). 2:16.

DANCING IN JAFFA (NR). Four-time ballroom dancing world champion Pierre Dulaine returns to his birth city, Jaffa, with his 10-week program "Dancing Classrooms," to teach Jewish and Israeli Palestinian children to dance and compete together.

FADING GIGOLO (R). A middle-aged florist becomes an unlikely male escort with the help of his friend, an elderly bookseller, in writer-director John Turturro’s (who also stars) idea of an old-fashioned Woody Allen comedy. By the end, this romantic farce is no more than a failure in terms of tone; a romantic comic juggling act where every dropped ball kills another potential laugh in a movie that desperately needs them. With John Turturro, Woody Allen, Sharon Stone, Liev Schreiber. HH (Moore, McClatchy-Tribune News Service -- 5/12). 1:30.

GODZILLA (PG-13). The titanic monster Godzilla rises to restore balance to the natural order as humanity stands defenseless in this reboot of the famous kaiju franchise. In a tale this timeworn and a film this devoid of humor, with tension frittered away by tedious repetition of the fights, anybody who has seen "Godzilla" in any incarceration can be forgiven for asking the obvious: "What else have you got?" With Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche. HH (Mooore, McClatchy-Tribune News Service -- 5/19). 2:03.

HEAVEN IS FOR REAL (PG). Based on the true story of a 4-year-old Nebraska boy who after major surgery tells his father -- a local minister -- that he’s been to Heaven. Although there are immediate doubts, people begin to accept the story when the youngster reveals information he could have been given only by those who died before he was born. The film is at its best when director Randall Wallace takes its message beyond preaching to the choir. With Greg Kinnear, Kelly Reilly, Connor Corum. (Bentley, The Fresno Bee -- 4/28). 1:40.

LOCKE (R). Over the course of an evening, a construction manager ("Dark Knight’s" Tom Hardy) juggles major personal and professional challenges from the front seat of his car. The obstacles that keep popping up seem melodramatic and some touches don’t really work. But "Locke" will hold your interest as it presents a side of the burly, bluff "Dark Knight" villain we have never seen before on screen. HHH (Moore, McClatchy-Tribune News Service -- 5/19). 1:28.

MILLION DOLLAR ARM (PG). In a last-ditch effort to save his career, a sports agent travels to India to find a young cricket player he can turn into baseball’s next great pitching ace. A character-based comedy-drama that’s also a smart film about the business of sports. It has its flaws but even so, the finished product is clever and sweetly entertaining. With Jon Hamm, Aasif Mandvi, Bill Paxton, Suraj Sharma. HHH (Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune -- 5/20). 2:04.

NEIGHBORS (R). Having relocated to the suburbs to raise their newborn baby, two young parents begin feuding with the fraternity that moves in next door. In between the belly laughs, "Neighbors" feels like a pulled punch, a mean comedy with a soft streak, a "Hangover" that never delivers the buzz. With Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Rose Byrne, Christopher Mintz-Plasse. HH (Moore, McClatchy-Tribune News Service -- 5/10). 1:36.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 (PG-13). The wall-crawling superhero Spider-Man tries to balance his ordinary life as Peter Parker with his extraordinary responsibilities, while confronting powerful new enemies. While this sqeuel is, if anything, more competent than the first film, it’s still not one that demands that you stick around after the credits. There’s nohing there. Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan. HH1/2 (Moore, McClatchy-Tribune News Service -- 5/3). 2:22.

THE LUNCHBOX (PG). Charming hearts and making hungry stomachs growl, Ritesh Batra’s bittersweet romance delights. Set amid Mumbai’s courier system of lunch delivery, a mistaken dropoff creates pen pals and perhaps more for an unfulfilled housewife and a bored bureaucrat. A smooth blend of pathos and comedy. In Hindi, with English subtitles. HHH (Persall, Tampa Bay Times -- 4/24). 1:44.

THE OTHER WOMAN (R). After discovering her boyfriend is married, a woman strikes up an unlikely friendship with the man’s wife, and the two plot their revenge -- with help from yet another of his mistresses. An escapist women’s empowerment comedy like many others, but elevated by the simple virtue of being, for most of its length, very, very funny. With Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Kate Upton. HHH (Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune -- 4/26). 1:50.

UNDER THE SKIN (R). In Scotland, a human form is on the hunt for men. Watching this film feels like a genesis moment -- of sci-fi fable, of filmmaking. of performance -- with all the ambiguity and excitement that implies. The fiction and truth of the film succeed as few movies do in getting under your skin. With Scarlett Johansson.(Sharkey, Los Angeles Times -- 5/3). 1:47.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST (PG-13). The mutant superheroes known as the X-Men join forces with their younger selves from the past to change a major historical event in hopes of saving the future. With Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Patrick Stewart, Jennifer Lawrence.
