Alice Through the Looking Glass (PG): After a year sailing the high seas, Alice returns to London and once again plunges into Underland where, this time, she becomes involved in a mission to save the Mad Hatter and help him find his family before Time runs out. Director James Bobin trudges on through the lushly designed world answering questions we never asked. Captain America — Civil War (PG-13): When mounting collateral damage forces the U.N. to oversee the Avengers and make them accountable for their actions, the team splits into two factions — one led by Steve Rogers/Captain America, who is determined to have the Avengers continue to operate unimpeded; the other by Tony Stark/Iron Man, who sees nothing wrong with the Avengers operating under oversight. An engaging, lively and just flat out fun use of characters we've gotten to know across the last eight years and 12 films. Marvel has made this all funny and that charm and care is what has and will keep audiences coming back over and over again. With Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie. Love & Friendship (PG): In writer-director Walt Stillman's adaptation of Jane Austen's epistolary novel, "Lady Susan," an attractive widow uses her temporary residence at the estate of her in-laws to secure a husband for herself and a future for her unwilling daughter. Immaculate in her appearance and delivery of Stillman's well-crafted prose, Kate Beckinsale, as the heartless Lady Susan Vernon, is effortless and commanding in every scene. Maggie's Plan (R): A young woman's plan to have a baby on her own crumbles when she falls in love with a professor, destroying his marriage in the process. With Greta Gerwig, Ethan Hawke, Julianne Moore. 1 hour 38 minutes. TC

Me Before You (R): A wealthy young man from London who is left paralyzed by a car accident forms an unexpected bond with the young woman from a small town who is hired as his caregiver. With Emilia Clarke, Sam Claflin. A slam dunk for fans of the book upon which the movie is based, who will be crying from the first scene. For the rest of us, it's a bit of a harder sell. Now You See Me — The Second Act (PG-13): Turning up in Macau after fleeing the U.S,, the two illusionists known as The Four Horsemen land in trouble again, this time when a hi-tech wiz forces them to steal a chip that can dominate the world. Popstar — Never Stop Never Stopping (R): When his sophomore album flops, a rapper/singer finds himself abandoned by friends, fans, hangers-on and rivals in this comedy starring Andy Shamberg. 1 hour 26 minutes. BM / NAM

Rams (R): A lethal disease threatens the livelihood of two estranged brothers who share the land and a way of life raising prized sheep in a secluded valley in Iceland. 1 hour 33 minutes. In Icelandic, with English subtitles. LC

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — Out of the Shadows (PG-13): The turtles are in action again, this time against supervillain Shredder, who allies with a mad scientist and cohorts. A Saturday morning cartoon on Michael Bay steroids. The kids can have it. 1 hour 52 minutes. BC / BM / NAM

The Angry Birds Movie (PG): Three outlier birds on an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds take charge of finding out what a group of visiting green piggies is up to. Based on a video puzzle game, this animated feature doesn't quite achieve the relative superiority of "The Lego Movie" but it's definitely not terrible and even surprisingly fun and heartfelt at times. The Conjuring 2 (R): A paranormal investigators couple come out of a self-imposed sabbatical and travel to a small English village to meet with a single mother of four who claims that something evil is going on in her house. With Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga. 2 hours 14 minutes. BC / BM

The Man Who Knew Infinity (PG-13): In 1913, a brilliant East Indian mathematician travels to England to work with a renowned professor. With Dev Patel, Jeremy Irons. 1 hour 54 minutes. TC

The Nice Guys (R): A bumbling private eye (Russell Crowe) and an enforcer for hire (Ryan Gosling) in 1970s Los Angeles team up to find a missing girl. Gosling and Crowe do have chemistry and an obvious sense of humor, which gets them far. They could have gotten farther, though, if the movie, while at times hilarious, didn't have such an uneven feel. • (Noveck, The Associated Press — May 23). 1 hour 50 minutes. BC

Warcraft (PG-13): A shaman uses dark magic to open a portal to the human world, triggering a conflagration leaders on both sides begin to question. 2 hours 3 minutes. BM

X-Men — Apocalypse (PG-13): Raven and Professor X lead a squad of young X-Men against the superpower mutant, Apocalypse, who, after being dormant for thousands of years, has awakened and recruited a team of powerful mutants to cleanse mankind and create a world order answerable to him. For those who know the characters, the payoff is big. But that's not to say this isn't a fun flick on its own, with grand scope, great special effects and it doesn't require knowledge of its predecessors to enjoy, With James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac. • (Cohen, The Associated Press — May 28). 2 hours 27 minutes.
