Finalist for Berkshire Athenaeum director's post recommended to trustees

PITTSFIELD — Following finalist interviews earlier this month, a search committee has nominated a current Berkshire Athenaeum staff member to replace longtime library Director Ronald Latham.

Alex Reczkowski, supervisor of technical services at the athenaeum, was selected by a trustee search committee from among four candidates interviewed. His name was put forth Tuesday to the full board of trustees, which will meet next on Feb. 2.

Reczkowski, 35, has worked at the Pittsfield library for the past five years. Previously, he worked at two academic libraries — at Fort Valley State University in Fort Valley, Ga., and at Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden-Sydney, Va.

The trustees' Library Director Selection Committee met Tuesday afternoon and heard a recommendation from its interview subcommittee, which met with the four finalists on Jan. 7.

The selection committee then voted unanimously to forward that recommendation to the board of trustees.

While in Pittsfield, Reczkowski also has been chairman of the city's Artscape Committee; has acted as stage manager for the Shakespeare in the Park plays held at The Common off First Street, and volunteers with the Central Berkshire Habitat for Humanity's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

Latham, 63, who has served as the library's director since 1992, will retire as of June 30.

The others interviewed for the post were Scott Hughes, city librarian in Bridgeport, Conn.; Christine Pelchat-Miller, public library director in Little Falls, N.J., and Amanda DiGiorgis, library director in Great Barrington.

The job was posted with a salary range from $64,022 to $72,437, with a starting salary dependent upon experience.
