GREAT BARRINGTON -- A firefighter was treated for minor injuries after an early morn ing structure fire, according to officials.

Firefighters were called to 208 Meadow Lane in Great Barrington at about 6:25 a.m., according to Deputy Chief Ed McCormick.

The extent of damage to the house was unknown as of Saturday afternoon. Further investigation into the cause is being handled by the state fire marshal, McCormick said.

McCormick said that a firefighter was taken to the hospital after being injured during the efforts.

A Great Barrington police officer at the scene said that the injuries sustained by the firefighter were "very minor." No other injuries were reported.

Resident Larry Kaveney said he lived in the right rear unit of what is a four-unit multi-family house.

He rushed his wife and newborn daughter out before risking his own life to run back in and save the family's pet ferret.

"I lost everything," Kaveney said. "Everything I had was in that house.

The Red Cross provided the family with emergency funding for temporary housing and some clothing, Kaveny noted.
