Fire destroys home on Swan Street in Pittsfield

Saturday July 28, 2012

PITTSFIELD -- A fast-moving fire gutted a home on Swan Street on Friday afternoon.

Firefighters in five fire engines and a command vehicle responded to 11 Swan St. around 3 p.m. to discover the two-story home engulfed in flames, according to acting Fire Chief Robert Czerwinski.

The house is located at the end of Swan Street amid a small cluster of other homes. No other house was damaged. Swan Street is located off Hancock Road.

No injuries were reported, although Czerwinski conceded that the combination of a hot afternoon and the fire "beat the guys up pretty bad. But we're OK."

The house is being rented by a young couple who was not at home, according to neighbors. The couple had reportedly just moved into the area, said one woman.

Czerwinski said the fire is under investigation. It appears to have started on the first floor and moved up to the second floor and attic. The fire moved quickly through the house, said Czerwinski.

Czerwinski said he was still trying to ascertain who owns the house. He did not know if the building was insured.

The house was essentially gutted, he said, although a wing on the west side of the house, along with the garage, may be salvageable.

Czerwinski said he was grateful that all 18 firefighters on the day shift were available to respond.

Units from Lenox, Lanesborough and Dalton also responded to the blaze as stand-by units. County Ambulance was also on the scene.

Although there were no injuries, several neighbors expressed concern over the fate of a pair of dogs that were unaccounted for. One of the dogs living in the house escaped, but there was no word on the other animals.
