STAMFORD, Conn. -- After one day of the 12-Under New England Regional girls softball tournament, the Berkshire Force is 1-1.

The Force beat Gorham, Maine 8-5 after losing to Kingston, Mass., 2-1.

Ashley Keegan and Julia Murphy pitched against Gorham and struck out seven.

Hayley Tobin and Kasey Sondrini each had two hits and two RBI for the Force. Britney Perkett and Murphy added two hits each.

The first game was quite the pitchers' duel. Murphy gave up two runs on seven hits, which normally is enough to win. But Kingston's defense shut the Force down.

Tobin had a hit and drove in the only run for the Force. Kailey Bell had two hits to lead the Force.

The Force plays North Country, N.H., at 9 this morning in the final game of pool play.
