Force take state softball title

LUNENBURG -- The Berkshire Force 14-under softball team routed host Lunenburg 13-1 in Sunday's Western Mass. State Babe Ruth championship game to advance to the New England Regional later this month.

Emily Koldys pitched a complete game, allowing nothing more than a third-inning run. The Force would take the lead in the bottom of the inning, never looking back.

Allie Hunt was 3 for 3 with five RBI, including an inside-the-park grand slam. She was named the tournament's most valuable player. Haley Cowlin added three hits for Berkshire, which will play in the July 27-29 regional tournament in Lynn.

AAU softball

PITTSFIELD -- The Western Mass. Shock improved to 9-1 this summer with a sweep of the Chicopee Pacers on Sunday at the Berkshire County Softball Complex. The Shock won 10-3 in the opener and 15-10 in the nightcap.

Sarah Rayner earned the win on the mound in the opener, striking out 11 Pacers. Tiffany Robinson homered twice and drove in four runs, while Sierra Bailey homered and Becca Grunow drove in a run.

Rayner doubled three times in the second game, while Robinson had four hits and Kendal Frye added three more. Shelbi Clary drove in a run, and Ashley Ciepiela was the winning pitcher.

Little League 12s

PITTSFIELD -- Don Gleason North and Myron Gray West advanced in the consolation bracket of the District I tournament on Sunday.

North scored in every inning but the fourth for a 10-7 win over Adams, while West used a six-run third and a seven-run fifth to eliminate Great Barrington 17-5.

Izaiya Mestre, Griffin Manns and Austin Rachielle had two hits each for North, while Matt Newton and Devon Walker doubled. Manns was the winning pitcher. Adam Bush had three hits for Adams, two singles and a double.

North will play Dalton-Hinsdale today at 5:30 p.m. at Springside Park, with the winner meeting West on Wednesday.

Jake McNeice led the way for West, belting two three-run homers. Cam Levardi and Chance McKnight also homered for the victors, while Jake Corcoran, Joe Heath and Brandon Peaslee had two hits each. Heath earned the win on the mound.

Chris Foley had three hits for Great Barrington, while Kevin Troiano had two hits.

Little League 11s

PITTSFIELD -- Great Barrington beat North Adams 4-3 in a pool-play game at Deming Field. Cavin Brady had three hits, while Scott Larochelle scored twice and added two hits. Jared Henry had two hits as well, and earned the win on the mound.

For North Adams, Scott McGuire and Dan Beebe had two hits each.

Cal Ripken League

FITCHBURG -- Lee's Cal Ripken All-Stars held Fitchburg to only two hits, beating the hosts 3-0 in the consolation bracket of the Western Mass 12U-60 state tournament. Lee then dropped a 9-1 decision to Marlborough in the nightcap.

Bennett Zimmerman went 1 for 3 with an RBI against Marl borough, while Alex Brickiel, Noah Hunter, and Michael Abdalla each had singles.

In the win over Fitchburg, pitcher Noah Hunter threw four strong innings, allowing two hits and striking out seven of the 14 batters he faced. Relief pitcher Kevin Kelly entered in the fifth and closed out the opponents with four strikeouts.

"[Hunter] has been our go-to guy all this season," Lee manager Billy Loehr said. "He's a great pressure pitcher that knows how to mix it up. [Hunter] and Kelly have worked hard together all year. Both of them have a lot of composure."

Hunter was also responsible for all of Lee's offensive production, going 2 for 3 with three RBI.
