Forum to be held on Tewksbury Memorial High School's mascot

TEWKSBURY >> A northeast Massachusetts high school's sports teams have been known as the Redmen for decades, but a name change may soon be imminent.

The Boston Globe reports ( ) a public forum has been scheduled for Jan. 27 for members of the community to discuss if a new nickname is needed at Tewksbury Memorial High School.

The meeting was spurred by a concerned parent who contacted Superintendent of Schools John O'Connor about a unique offer.

Linda Thomas says she emailed O'Connor after reading that athletic apparel giant Adidas was offering design resources and financial assistance to schools thinking of rebranding.

After the issue was raised at a December meeting of the School Committee, O'Connor decided to call the forum.

Approximately 40 high schools in Massachusetts still use Native American iconography.
