PITTSFIELD -- A 23-year-old man was taken to Berkshire Medical Center early Saturday morning with life-threatening injuries after he was struck by a freight train, police said.

The incident was reported at 12:44 a.m., and occurred in the vicinity of the CSX Railroad bridge on Woodlawn Avenue, which is located in the William Stanley Business Park of the Berkshires.

Authorities who responded to the scene found the man alive just west of the bridge. The Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services also responded to the scene.

Police declined to release the man's identity on Saturday because members of his family had not been notified. They have yet to determine why the man was on the tracks.

According to police, the freight train stopped after striking the man. The incident was reported to police by CSX Railroad personnel.

No further information was available on Saturday.
