Friday's high schools: Taconic baseball beats Smith Academy, 7-1

PITTSFIELD -- Steve Witkowski and Jake McNeice combined on a five-hitter as Taconic beat Smith Academy 7-1 in a non-league game Friday morning.

The Braves scored a run in the bottom of the first inning and never trailed. They were, according to Taconic coach Kevin Stannard, a little lax early on.

"We didn't come with a lot of desire. You could tell it was a morning game," he said. "It's good that Steve was on."

Witkowski gave up one unearned run on four hits in his six innings, striking out nine.

Witkowski helped his cause with a three-run triple in the fifth inning. He finished with two hits and four runs batted in. Joey Dewey had two hits and two RBI.

Lenox 12, Mount Everett 6

SHEFFIELD -- The Millionaires broke open a close game with a seven-run fifth inning.

The Eagles (2-3) did get their bats going late, scoring five times in the seventh, but the damage was done.

"We put the bat on the ball more. Defensively, it was pretty bad. We had a couple of key errors and they scored seven runs," said Everett coach Jesse Carpenter. "We're not doing enough to win."

Dillon Benham pitched the first six innings and got the win. Jake Jourdain led the Millionaires with two of their nine hits, and he drove in three.

Commerce 3, McCann Tech 0

NORTH ADAMS -- McCann Tech made four errors in the third inning, opening the door for Commerce to score three times with only one hit. The Hornets' (4-3, 4-2 Tri-County) defensive lapse made Austin Miller, who allowed only five hits, the hard-luck loser.

"Austin pitched fantastic," coach Pat Ryan said. "Our defense has been pretty solid, but not in that inning. And offensively we didn't support him. We just didn't put the ball in play."

NORTH ADAMS -- Haley Maloy didn't have to do a lot of work in the circle for the Hornets, who backed her up with a 27-run performance for her first win of the year.

Maloy tossed a two-hitter in 4 1/2 innings of work, striking out five and walking five.

Lexi Andrews was 2 for 5 with a walk, six RBI and three runs scored, while Alanza Quinones was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and four RBI.

"We came out strong in the first inning and never wanted to let up an inch," said McCann coach Kate Galli.

Boys lacrosse: Chicopee 9, Pittsfield 8 (OT)

PITTSFIELD -- Chicopee's Scott Geissler scored the game-winning goal almost 3 minutes into the overtime period Friday, handing PHS (3-2, 3-1 county) the hard-luck loss.

Alex Teichert scored three times for Pittsfield, with Ryan Jacoby and Brenden Leary scoring two each. Nikolai Pixley made 13 saves for the Generals, and his game impressed PHS coach Scott Aitken.
