Gale, Rosse lead Hoosac girls hoops past Pittsfield, 58-41

CHESHIRE -- Jenn Gale scored 11 of her 19 points in the second half and Emily Rosse scored 10 of her 13 in the second half as the Hoosac Valley girls used pressure defense and a blistering transition game to pull away from Pittsfield 58-41 on Saturday evening.

The score was somewhat deceptive, as the Generals were doing a good job matching the Hurricanes' defensive intensity for much of the game. It was only 27-23 in favor of Hoosac midway through the third quarter.

"Pittsfield has a very good team," said Hurricane coach Ron Wojcik. "Their backcourt is very sound. They banged us around and were very physical. They played very well until we put a run together.

"We've been playing this way for a couple of years now," said Wojcik. "The girls have bought into it and we've been very successful."

"They got a big lead and made us catch up," said General coach Joe Racicot. "But we came back a little, and I saw a lot of positive things. They are very good on second shots, and that was something we were not as good at tonight."

The Hurricanes did jump out to an 11-1 lead with about 2:30 left in the first quarter. That was when Rosse, trying to block a Lauren Carnevale shot, picked up her second foul.

"What did I think when I got that [second] foul?" said Rosse. "I knew I was going to sit. I saw that coming pretty quickly."

"When Emily went out, we knew we all had to step up," said Gale. "She's good. When she isn't playing, we have some big shoes to fill. "

Still, Hoosac remained up by 10, 14-4, after a period as Kaitlyn Frederick was doing a good job battling underneath in Rosse's stead.

The score was 16-6 when Hoosac embarked on its first surge. McKenzie Robinson caught the ball on the right elbow and drilled a three. About 33 seconds later, she caught a pass from Gale on the left elbow, and buried another trey to make the score 22-6. Time out, PHS.

To their credit, the Generals clawed back. A basket by Carnevale, another by Trinity Cookis and a free throw by Dom Satrape cut the lead to 11. It was 25-13 at intermission.

Pittsfield made its move as the third quarter began. A three-point play by Allie Hunt, a three-pointer by Satrape and a nice drive in the paint from Carnevale sliced the lead to 27-23. Time out, Hurricanes.

After a few choice words from Wojcik, Hoosac bounced back. Meg Rodowicz canned two put-back buckets, and Madi Ryan picked off a pass to go coast-to-coast, pushing the score back up to 10, which is where it remained after three periods.

Gale initiated another six-point run early in the fourth, converting a three-point play and, about a minute later, knocking down a three-point basket. The Hurricanes finally pulled away at the end of the game.

Hunt, who went scoreless in the first half, scored 11 with nine rebounds in the second. Carnevale led the Generals with 12 and Satrape ended with eight.

Gale's 19 led all scorers. In addition to Rosse's 13, Robinson added 11.
