SPRINGFIELD >> Just as many other swimmers did, Caroline Bissaillon entered two individual events at the Western Mass. swim meet on Saturday.

She was only one of three on the girls side, though, to exit the pool with two victories. The junior won each freestyle sprint event, taking the 50-yard free in 24.47 and the 100 free in 53.46 in the Art Linkletter Natatorium pool at Springfield College.

"I knew I was a contender for the 50," Caroline Bissaillon said. "But I knew there would be some good competitors. Going into the 100, I knew that if I just got out in front, I could stay in front.

"That's the mentality you have to have in the 100. You have to swim hungry through the water."

Bissaillon's win in the 50 free was .64 seconds faster than second-place finisher Monika Nowak of Longmeadow. Her victory in the 100 free was over one full second faster, 1.16 seconds to be exact, than Nowak.

"All those girls in that heat, I race against them all the time," Bissaillon said of the 100. "I know how good they are and how talented they are. It was a good race."

Another top finisher from Berkshire County was Jessie Tobin of St. Joseph. The junior registered two individual second-place finishes — in the 200 free (1:56.80) and then in the 500 free (5:11.81).

Monument's Emma Wilber was also second individually, with her runner-up finish coming in the 100 butterfly (59.91). Monument's 200 free relay team, comprised of Kathleen Bissaillon, Anna Rubino, Wilber and Caroline Bissaillon, also recorded a second-place finish (1:42.67).

Those were just some of the swims that helped the Spartans finish in fourth place overall (203.5 points), 3.5 points ahead of fifth-place Westfield. St. Joseph finished in sixth with 157 points and Pittsfield finished in 20th.

The top three finishers were Longmeadow (331), Minnechaug (256.5) and Northampton (238) for the girls.

Longmeadow's victory included two individual wins from Jerrica Li. The senior has never lost an individual race in her high school career, which includes six state titles heading into next weekend's state championship meet. She won the 200 individual medley (2:04.45) and the 100 breaststroke (1:04.27) on Saturday.

Wilber was third in the latter, recording a time of 1:09.42 in the breast.

The only other top-three finishes from Berkshire County girls were from two relay teams. St. Joseph's 200 medley relay team with Emma Whitney, Elizabeth Bartlett, Tobin and Elizabeth Bernardy (1:56.10) and Monument's 400 free relay team of Kathleen Bissaillon, Aubrey Blanchard, Emma Wilber and Caroline Bissaillon (3:46.35) both finished third.

Top-five finishers from Berkshire County on the girls side were Elizabeth Bernardy of St. Joe in the 100 breast (fourth), the Crusaders' 200 free relay team (fourth) and Kathleen Bissaillon in the 100 free (fifth).
